May 17, 2011:
I have graded the Exams and submitted course grades for M&AE 5070.
I've always told the students in my classes that I don't really grade
on a curve, and that if everyone does well, they'll all get good grades.
This is the first time I've ever had to live up to that promise, since
the average grade on the final exam this semester was about 13 points
higher than the historical average.
Here's a summary:
-
Almost half the class scored 90 or above.
-
Median score was 89 and mean score was about 84,
with a standard deviation of about 11.
Thanks for making it a memorable semester;
have a great summer!
-
May 9, 2011:
I have the graded Exercise Set VII student papers;
you may stop by my office any time to pick them up.
-
May 9, 2011:
I have just updated my Office Hours, and those of our TA,
Varun Hiremath, for the period between now and the
Examination on Wednesday evening; see the
Contact page.
Varun's Wednesday Office Hours will be in Upson 211.
-
May 4, 2011:
Quiz B papers were handed back in class today;
performance is summarized here:
-
Scores ranged from a high of 29 (out of 30 possible) to a low of about 12;
-
Median score was 25 and mean score was about 23,
with a standard deviation of about 5.
-
May 4, 2011:
A .pdf version of the slides I have used in the control portion of the class
has been put on the Lecture page.
-
May 3, 2011:
The final examination for M&AE 5070 is one week from tomorrow (Period A)!
The exam will be given from 7:00 - 9:30 pm on Wednesday, May 11,
in 122 Rockefeller Hall.
I am told by the building coordinator that Rockefeller Hall is open
evenings, so there should be no problem with access to the building or
the examination room.
The exam will be cumulative for the course, but will stress material
covered since the mid-term examination.
It will be Open-Book and Open-Notes.
-
May 2, 2011:
The seventh, and final, homework assignment was handed out in class on Friday;
it is due this coming Friday, May 6.
Electronic (.pdf) copies are also available on the Homework page.
Note: the version handed out in class was missing the "=" in the specification
if I_{xz}. Note that I_{xz} is, in fact, negative.
-
April 28, 2011:
Student Course Evaluations are an important mechanism we use as input
to improve our courses. To encourage students to fill out the on-line
course evaluations for M&AE 5070, I will add 10 homework points to the
grade of each student who completes the on-line evaluation.
Note that I will not be given access to the actual evaluations
until after I have turned in my course grades for the semester;
I will simply be given a list of the CIT userids for those students who have
completed the form (so I can give them their additional homework points).
The on-line course evaluations will be available from noon on Monday, May 2,
through 6:00 PM on Wednesday, May 11.
-
April 22, 2011:
A reminder that Quiz B will be in class on Wednesday, April 27.
It will be similar in tone to Quiz A, but will cover all material
through Chapter 5 of the course notes and Exercise Set VI.
The focus will be on characterizing the dynamical modes of typical aircraft
and interpreting simple (lower-order) models as approximations.
-
April 21, 2011:
I have just updated the Sample Questions document, correcting a typo
and clarifying one of the questions -- nothing very major.
-
April 19, 2011:
In addition to the printed Solutions for Exercise Set V,
I have also posted (on the Homework page) a printout of a skeleton
MATLAB code of the type needed for this exercise.
-
April 15, 2011:
Questions for most previous Quizzes, Midterms, and Final Examinations
have been posted on the Lecture page. There is also a link here:

-
April 4, 2011:
Student papers for the midterm examination were handed back in class today.
Performance is summarized here:
-
Scores ranged from a high of 97 (out of 100 possible) to a low of about 40;
-
Median and mean scores were about 56, with a standard deviation of about 12.
If you didn't pick up your exam booklet in class today,
you can stop by my office to get it, or pick it up in class on Wednesday.
-
April 1, 2011:
As announced in class today, Quiz B has been postponed.
The new date for this quiz will be announced later
(at least one week before the quiz itself).
-
March 31, 2011:
I have just posted a new version of Chapter 5 (DynamicStability.pdf)
on the Lecture page. This latest version contains a few minor expansions
of explanations and corrections of typos, but the most important difference
is that all the examples for the Boeing 747 have been altered to use the
correct data. The earlier version used somewhat incorrect mass and moment
of inertia data in order to be consistent with the values used in Nelson,
which was used as a textbook in several previous versions of the course.
A new version of Chapter 6 (Control.pdf), also intended to correct these data,
will be coming soon.
-
March 28, 2011:
In addition to my regular Office Hours today, I will also be available
in my office to answer questions tomorrow, Tuesday, March 29, in the
morning and from 4:00 - 5:30 pm.
-
March 24, 2011:
At the request of several students, I have posted an old mid-term examination
here mae5070SampleQs.pdf;
Note this link was updated on April 15 to point to the complete set
of examination and quiz questions.
-
March 18, 2011:
The mid-term examination is scheduled for Wednesday, March 30.
It will cover material through Chapter 4 in the course notes
and Exercise Set III.
It will be in class, will be Open Book/Notes,
and will contain a mix of (computational) problems similar to the homework,
and (conceptual) questions similar to those on the quiz.
-
March 15, 2011:
Exercise Set IV was handed out in class on Monday; there is also a link
to a .pdf version on the Homework page.
On reflection, I realized there is no good reason to have this homework due
before the midterm examination, so I have moved the due date for Exercise
Set IV to Friday, April 1 (no, this is not an April Fools joke).
Quiz A papers were also handed back in class on Monday.
Performance is summarized here:
-
Scores ranged from a high of 25 (out of 30 possible) to a low of about 10;
-
Median and mean scores were about 20, with a standard deviation of about 3.
-
March 7, 2011:
Due to the cancellation of today's class,
Homework Set III will not be due until Friday, March 11.
-
March 4, 2011:
The mid-term has been moved to Wednesday, March 30 --
i.e., the Wednesday after you return from the Spring Recess.
Quiz A remains, as previously announced, on Friday, March 11.
-
March 2, 2011:
Exercise Set III was handed out in class today; there is also a link
to a .pdf version on the Homework page.
-
March 1, 2011:
I have been told of several internship opportunities at Goldwind,
a Chinese Wind Energy company.
Here is a link to more information:
Cornell_GCC.pdf.
-
March 1, 2011:
It has been pointed out that examinations in this course and those of
Professors Moon and Wang are all bunched within a 26 hour period
in the week before the Spring recess.
I am considering moving our mid-term to the Wednesday after the recess,
March 30, to alleviate this situation.
Please let me know as soon as possible if moving the M&AE 5070 midterm exam
will case any problems.
-
February 23, 2011:
Quizzes have been scheduled as follows:
Quiz A: Friday, March 11
Quiz B: Wednesday, April 6
Each quiz will be closed-book, in-class, and last approximately one-half hour.
Quiz A will be primarily on basic concepts in flight stability and control,
and on static longitudinal stability.
Quiz B will be on basic concepts in systems dynamics,
as applied to aircraft dynamics, and the relevant stability derivatives.
-
February 14, 2011:
Graded papers for Exercise Set I were returned in class today.
Also, Exercise Set II was handed out; it is also available in .pdf format
on the Homework page.
Exercise Set II is due in class on Monday, February 21.
-

Starting on Monday, February 7, lectures will be in 203 Phillips Hall;
this is a larger room in which we should be much more comfortable.
