Sample some Christianized late-Roman art in various media: mosaic, sculpture and relief, or ivory carving; consider the messages this artwork means to convey.

The 1960s & 70s saw some far-reaching developments in Christianity, including the Vatican II decision in 1962 to allow Catholics to worship in their vernacular (spoken) languages; up until then, for over 1500 years, the authoritative text of the Bible throughout the western Church had been St Jerome's Vulgate Latin translation, most closely approximated in English by the Douai-Rheims (16thC) translation. See the Vulgate, Douai-Rheims and KJV texts side-by-side for comparison. You may also be interested in looking up the Apocrypha (= biblical texts excluded from the official canon) or in reading their contents summarized.

For a surprisingly intelligent & moving summary, 1970s style, of the gospel story of Jesus' final days, read Tim Rice's lyrics to Jesus Christ Superstar. (NB: these lyrics, taken from the 1973 movie version, are slightly watered-down when compared with the original stage production text. Nevertheless, some Christian and Jewish groups found this adaptation unacceptable. Nothing like the firestorm stirred up by Mel Gibson's Passion of the Christ some three decades later, but still.)

Another innovation of the period was the so-called Jesus Movement, a hippie evangelical Church. The same name is applied by scholars of the early centuries AD to the following of Jesus in the time before they consolidated their separate identity as Christians. Take an engaging tour through the Jesus movement and its aftermath, or check out some scholarship on the New Testament.

You can find a good introduction to the literary forms of the New Testament (Gospels, Acts, Epistles & Apocalypse) in Bruce Metzger & Roland Murphy's New Oxford Annotated Bible (1991) .

The PBS documentary mini-series "From Jesus to Christ: The First Christians" traces the history of Jesus and his followers in the first three centuries AD. In addition to visiting the website, you can watch the entire four-hour Frontline series online.
