Pop-up Applications

Corn planters can be configured to place a small amount of fertilizer around the seed during planting either alone or in combination with a banded fertilizer application.  See the diagram below for an example.

In order to not injure the young plant, only a few pounds of N and P fertilizer are applied around the seed. The pros and cons of a pop-up fertilizer application are:

Pros

• Could result in a yield response.
• Can be applied in combination with a banded fertilizer during planting.

Cons

• Must use low rates of fertilizers or risk phytotoxicity.
• Most planters must be retro-fitted for pop-up applications.
