Mission Possible

The gold-coated 37 degree incubator was recently stolen from lab #503-65F. The perpetrator had gloves and a mask on, but while leaving the premises, accidently spilled some of the bacteria from the incubator onto the floor. The organism that was spilled was a motile (flagellated), Gram negative, rod. Unfortunately, there were other bacteria on the floor and so you must pick the right one. After you pick the bacterium you are looking for, you must come up with a way of using the organism to track down the suspect.

So, your mission, should you choose to accept it, is to 1) examine the following plate which you have streaked from the floor and isolate the one bacterial colony which is key in reaching a verdict. After you isolate this colony you must 2) devise a means of detecting the bacterium in question at the crime scene which should lead you to the suspect. Due to the budget cuts in the Government lab, you are limited to the techniques described in the Cornell MICROWEB Microscopy pages.

Remember, you are looking for a flagellated, Gram negative, rod-shaped bacterium.

I accept my call of duty.

I can't go on like this any longer.
