The "Generic" Cell

While bacteria differ from each other in many ways, we can still understand the structure and function of a bacterial cell by examining structures common to many or even all bacteria. Structures such as the cell membrane and nuclear region are common to all living bacteria. Some of the exterior options, such as flagella and capsules, are found associated with many, but not all bacterial cells. Some of the more common structures are shown below.
