Read Chapter 6, Sections 601 - 603, IBC. Answer the following questions:
1. Section 602-603:
- Building elements must have fire-resistive ratings not less than those specified in Tables 601 and 602, whichever is more restrictive. Give one example each of a building element (with specific occupancy and/or construction type) whose fire-resistive rating is governed by each table; that is, by Table 601 and by Table 602.
- Type I and II construction is generally noncombustible, but with numerous exceptions enumerated in Section 603.
- What are three instances where fire-retardant-treated wood can be used?
- What chapters of the IBC are referenced for additional information on exceptions to the "noncombustible" rule (it is not necessary to go to those chapters; just list them)?
- Examining the footnotes for Table 601:
- Which structural elements are not considered part of the "structural frame"?
- How are the tabular values adjusted for roof supports?
- When is fire-rated roof construction not required?
A relatively new edition of the International Building Code is online. Follow these steps to gain access (Cornell netID required):
- Go to the Cornell Library Catalog and type MADCAD in the search field, set for "title."
- Click on the link, "Connect to full text" under electronic access.
- Click on the button to login to madcad.
- Click on IBC 2003 at the top of the left-hand menu bar, and then immediately below on "contents."
- From this point, you're on your own...
