Read Chapter 4, Sections 401 - 405 only, IBC. Answer the following questions:
1. Section 402:
- What is the difference between a "covered mall building" and an "anchor building;" and are anchor buildings considered to be part of the covered mall buildings?
- Under what conditions are 2 (or more) means of egress required in a tenant space?
- What is the maximum distance permitted from any point within a tenant space to an exit from the mall (combine the maximum distance within the tenant space and the maximum distance within the mall).
- Are sprinklers required in covered mall buildings?
2. Section 403:
- How is a "high-rise" building defined (section 403.1)?
- Are sprinklers required in high-rise buildings?
- Aside from elevators, what are the three "power loads" for which standby (emergency) power is required?
3. Section 404:
- According to the definition of an "atrium:" (i) Can an enclosed stairway connecting three stories be considered an atrium; (ii) If a space is defined as a "mall," can it simultaneously be defined as an atrium; and (iii) Can an open-air courtyard be considered an atrium?
- If a space adjacent to an atrium is not sprinklered, what sort of fire-resistance-rated barrier is required between that space and the atrium?
- In a fully-sprinklered building containing an atrium, summarize the three exceptions to the requirement for a 1-hour fire barrier between the atrium and adjacent spaces.
4. Section 405:
- In general, the provisions for underground buildings apply only when a below-grade floor level is how many feet below the lowest level of egress?
- Can the "underground" portion of a building be designed as Type II construction?
- Which levels in a building containing an "underground" component need to be sprinklered?
- For really deep underground buildings (with a floor level more than 60 feet below the egress level), what sort of compartmentation is required, and what are the implications for smoke control, elevator access, and access to exits?
A relatively new edition of the International Building Code is online. Follow these steps to gain access (Cornell netID required):
- Go to the Cornell Library Catalog and type MADCAD in the search field, set for "title."
- Click on the link, "Connect to full text" under electronic access.
- Click on the button to login to madcad.
- Click on IBC 2003 at the top of the left-hand menu bar, and then immediately below on "contents."
- From this point, you're on your own...
