Read Chapter 9, Sections 901 - 905, 909 - 910, IBC. Skim sections 906 - 908. Answer the following questions:

1. Section 901:

  1. What other "code" is referenced by the IBC concerning issues of fire protection systems?
  2. How does the IBC deal with the possibility that "thread" specifications for fire department connections may vary from place to place?
2. Section 902:
  1. What is an "annunciator?"
  2. What are the two components of an "automatic fire-extinguishiing system?"
  3. Briefly describe the five types (not classes) of standpipe systems.
3. Section 903:
  1. What occupancy classes (just A, B, C, etc., not the sub-classifications like A-1) require automatic sprinkler systems at least sometimes?
  2. NFPA 13 is the general specification for the installation of sprinkler systems. What sub-group of occupancies are covered in NFPA 13R and NFPA 13D?
  3. Do sprinkler systems need to trigger alarm systems (903.4.2)?
4. Section 904:
  1. List the alternatives to sprinkler systems in sections 904.5 through 904.10
5. Section 905:
  1. What building heights trigger the requirement for Class III standpipes (without considering exceptions)?
6. Section 909:
  1. In a "rational analysis" of smoke control, what 6 factors are considered (909.4)?
7. Section 910:
  1. In what occupancies, or for what types of storage, are smoke and heat vents required (910.2)?
