Assignment #3: Site visit: Martha Van Rensselaer Addition

building Issued: 10 February 2004
Due: 17 February 2004

On a single sheet of 11" x 17" paper, sketch a "mock-up" of a building section and detail section based on a site visit to the Martha Van Rensselaer Hall addition designed by HOLT Architects.

drawing

Note:

  • Sketch building section at 1/8" = 1'-0"; and detail section at 1-1/2" = 1'-0" (1/8 full size).

  • Bring sketch pad; note approximate dimensions only (do not bring tape measure); get overall, approximate form of entire section and selected detail - it doesn't need to be precisely accurate or complete.

  • Even if sketch is freehand, it should be drawn or traced over "hardline" guidelines.

  • Finished sketch is intended as a "mock-up" of a final drawing, to see how it fits on the page, and to begin to determine dimensioning and labeling strategies.

Feb. 17 class: Go to HOLT Architects PC, 217 N. Aurora St., Ithaca, NY. (near Buffalo Street; 273-7600). Meet there exactly at 12:30 pm, or come to 115 W.S. no later than 12:10 pm for a brisk walk down the hill. Bring assignment with you, and be prepared to take notes and ask questions.
