Sections

Based on National CAD Standard 3.1 PDF pages 400-402

Building sections

Building sections at same scale as floor plans. Note that wall sections are specifically designed for exterior walls, so key in exterior wall details from the wall sections, not the building sections.

Elevations of interiors are generally not shown on building sections.

  • Include key plan indicating where the sections are cut.
  • Show scale.
  • Column grid lines are sometimes used (at top of section).
  • Show room numbers of the rooms cut through in the section.
  • Floor to floor dimensions, but no floor elevations (except for the initial datum elevation).
  • Indicate finish grade.
  • Materials, especially where changes in materials occur.

Wall sections

  • Can be used to reference larger-scale details at the exterior wall/windows.
  • Avoid redundancy: do not show the same notes/details that show up in the large-scale details.
  • Show finish grade, but avoid dimensioning things like ceiling heights that are shown in finish schedules.
  • For masonry buildings, show masonry coursing.

See images on p.402 of the PDF for the "hierarchy" of dimensions in building sections, wall sections, and details at various scales.
