Plans

Based on National CAD Standard 3.1 PDF pages 373-391

Plans are sheet type 1. They typically contain:

  • drawing scale
  • column grid lines
  • north arrow (true north and plan north, if different)
  • key plan, in cases where the sheet size is too small to include the entire context.

There are numerous discipline-specific plan types. These include:

  • Civil: examples are site demolition, dimension control, grading, paving, site utilities. Include north arrow, key plan.
  • Landscape: may include site preparation (which includes demolition of structures and removal of plants), irrigation, plant materials.
  • Structural: includes columns, load-bearing or bracing walls (shear walls), and floor structure (beams, girders, decks, slabs).
  • Architectural: these plans are the starting point for all other drawings. First floor (ground floor) is 1; occupied floors above are sequentially numbered; basement floors below begin with B1. Reflected ceiling plans show geometry of ceiling as if looking down at a mirror. Show room numbers but not door swings. Omit plumbing, mechanical, electrical items except in "architecturally significant spaces" where they have an impact on the design itself. Otherwise, cover the omission with a note, e.g.: "This plan shows the locations of plumbing, electrical, and mechanical items selectively. Refer to Plumbing, Mechanical, and Electrical plans for all items not shown herein."

Show roof plans with floor plans, and at same scale. Do not include site information in roof plan. Column grid lines can be omitted unless useful for locating various roof items. Roof plans should include: direction of slopes, roof drains (including emergency or overflow drains/scuppers); elevations of high and low points; roof pavers, if any; skylights.

Include on floor plans: room names and numbers; dimensions; level changes and elevations; partition types; window types (in small projects; otherwise, may be shown in elevations); section, detail, and elevation references; edges of floor materials, floor drains and slopes (unless shown in large-scale plan); plumbing fixtures, extinguisher cabinets; built-in cabinetry; shaft openings; recessed areas in floor; significant overhead features (dashed line).
