Mock-up drawings
Based on National CAD Standard 3.1 PDF pages 421-426
This set is also called the "cartoon" set, "story book" set, or "mini" set. It is intended to give an overview of the complete architectural working drawings, often at 1/4 size. Note that it isn't the actual content that is important in the mock-up set, but rather the overview of what drawings are required, and how they are distributed on each sheet.
The basic steps described in the National CAD Standard cannot all be followed for our class exercise, as we may not have available a complete schematic design set to work from. In any case, the steps can be summarized as follows:
- Create sheet list based on Drawing set organization module; format the sheets per the Sheet organization module.
- Create a blank project sheet at 1/4 size and make sufficient copies for the mock-up drawings.
- Using reductions from the schematic phase, and/or new sketches, paste the 1/4 size drawings on the mock-up sheets, either manually, or using CAD.
- Identify typical details, circling them on plans or sections, and enlarge for pasting into detail mock-up sheets. Note that the intention is not to actually draw the details rigorously, but to show them approximately and in scale. Add "bubbles" with the detail number on the sheets where they were initially circled.
- Identify rooms for which interior elevations are needed (use appropriate symbols), and sketch such elevations on the appropriate sheet.
- Estimate size of schedules.
- Show partition, door, window diagrams to show where they are on the sheet (not specifically what each diagram actually consists of).
- Assign space for 3D drawings, if needed; and save one sheet for miscellaneous details (generally not needed for our class project).
There are several guidelines listed for the production of a mock-up set:
- Use the smallest sheet size compatible with the drawings used (specifically, plans and elevations); if necessary, use match lines to reduce sheet size.
- See the Sheet organization module for additional information on mock-up sets. For example, it is common to use 8-1/2" x 11" paper size (or larger, for larger actual sizes), based on a 1/4 reduction. Scales are therefore "divided by" 4, e.g., 1/4" scale becomes 1/16"=1'-0" in the mock-up.
- Create list of "views" for each drawing sheet (see worksheet in CAD Standard). Note that part of the rationale for such a list has to do with keeping track of a production budget: this does not apply to academic exercises, where labor is "free."
- Assign these "views" to the appropriate sheet.
- Check for completeness.
