ARCH 463: Special Topics in Structures: The Tectonic Articulation of Structure
Assignment for Week 6, Spring 2001

Due: 2 March 2001

Experiment with funicular manipulation: follow the following steps to create a funicular (axial force) structural scheme to support the mezzanine shown below:

Schematic section through mezzanine

1. Build a string and cardboard model corresponding to proposed points of connection to mezzanine to find funicular (tension) shape of support:

Diagram of weighted model (alternatively, use statics or graphic statics)

2. Reverse curve to create funicular compressive arch:

Diagram of compressive structure: move mezzanine to desired location relative to arch

3. "Play" with compressive elements by selectively reversing them into tension:

Reverse compressive elements into tension

4. Resolve forces down to foundation, using only tension and compression:

Resolve forces to foundation

5. Continue "playing" with tension and compression by reversing direction, or dividing into component forces, etc.:

More reversals

6. Present as a series of models and/or diagrams: scale at 1/8" = 1'-0" or 1/4" = 1'-0".
