ARCH 463: Special Topics in Structures:
The Tectonic Articulation of Structure

Project #2: Case study -- Building or other
significant structure

Issued: 6 October 1998
Prelim: 20 October 1998 -- bring in preliminary documentation of proposed
structure (photos, plans, elevations, sketches, etc.) for discussion.
Due: 10 November 1998

Select a building or "engineered" structure (e.g., bridge, walkway) that
has "tectonic" qualities.

Document the structure through appropriate drawings (plans, sections,
axonometrics, etc.).

Analyze the "tectonic" quality of the structure through diagrams and descriptions.
Show how the object's form expresses something about its structural function.
There are two equally important aspects of the structure that should be shown:
first, the structural basis of the form (what are the forces at work, etc.;
how does the shape of the object respond to those forces); secondly, the
formal-expressive characteristics of the structure (what are the aesthetic,
or cultural roots of the form). It may be possible to analyze this second aspect of the
object through a series of diagrams, in which the "conventional" form of the object
transforms into its "tectonic" form, each step shown in relation to some external
cultural or aesthetic agenda. This will require some speculation.

Format: 11 x 17 sheets, horizontal. Include your name, ARCH 463/F98, building
or structure data including location, and architect or designer (if known).
