ARCH 463: Special Topics in Structures:
The Tectonic Articulation of Structure

Project #1: Case study -- Object of everyday use

Issued: 1 September 1998
Prelim: 8 September -- bring in object (or sketch/photo of object) for discussion.
Due: 29 September 1998

Select a small utilitarian object (for example, a lamp, handrail, bracket, etc.)
that has "tectonic" qualities.

Document the object through appropriate drawings (plans, sections,
axonometrics, etc.).

Analyze the "tectonic" quality of the object through diagrams and descriptions.
Show how the object's form expresses something about its structural function.
There are two equally important aspects of the object that should be shown:
first, the structural basis of the form (what are the forces at work, etc.;
how does the shape of the object respond to those forces); secondly, the
formal-expressive characteristics of the structure (what are
the aesthetic, or cultural roots of the form). It may be possible to analyze
this second aspect of the object through a series of diagrams, in which the
"conventional" form of the object transforms into its "tectonic" form, each
step shown in relation to some external cultural or aesthetic agenda.
This will require some speculation.

Format: 11 x 17 sheets, horizontal. Include your name, ARCH 463/F98, object
data including location (if fixed in place), manufacturer (if moveable), and
designer (if known).
