ARCH 262: Building Technology, Materials & Methods
Assign #6: Fire protection/ building code exercise

assigned: Nov. 24, 1999
due: Dec. 1, 1999
The year is 2004. You are a young intern at the Los Angeles office of KFP Architects. The design partner you've been working with hands you a sketch of a proposed 5-story office building and says: "You're a Cornell graduate...I have two questions for you: 1) Can this scheme be built using Type II one-hour construction? and 2) How can the scheme be redesigned, still using Type II one-hour construction, to maximize the allowable floor area?" After a moment of pure panic, you dig deep into your memory and recall the correct procedure from Building Technology, Materials & Methods. "Just one question," you reply, wiping the sweat nonchalantly from your brow: "What floor-to-floor height should I assume?" "Twelve feet, just like all the other towers we've designed," she responds. "And use the latest edition of the Uniform Building Code."

Site Plan

Method:
  1. Find occupancy classification, Table 3-A _______
  2. What is basic 1-story allowable floor area? Table 5-B _______
  3. What is multi-story allowable floor area? _______
  4. What is allowable increase for yards and public ways? Note that for separation on 3 sides, the increase permitted (sq. ft) = (multi-story allow. area)(min. width - 20 = 30)(allowed fractional increase per ft. = 0.025) = _______
  5. Add allow. area + increase permitted to get new allowable area: _______
  6. Can sprinklers be used to increase allowable area for a 5-story building? _______
    • If sprinklers are used, what is total allowable area for a 5-story building?__________
    • Using sprinklers, what would be the total allowable area for a 4-story building?__________
  7. Can the 5-story building be built as proposed? _______
  8. What is the maximum floor area possible using Type II one-hour construction and any number of stories you choose (consider the size of the lot as well as the building code restrictions!)__________
    • How many stories should be used?_________
    • What area per floor?__________
  9. What fire-rating is required on structural frame? Table 6-A _______
  10. What fire-rating is required on floor-ceilings? Table 6-A _______
