ARCH 262: Building Technology, Materials & Methods
Assign #1: Building systems, wood-frame construction

assigned: Sept. 6, 1999
due: Sept. 15, 1999
Use the text book and the 2 references described below to create a detailed wall section of a wood platform-framed house. The section should include the following elements:
  • shingle roof, underlayment, sheathing, wall siding, rafters, joists
  • sub-floor and finish floor, baseboard or trim
  • insulation, vapor retarder, air barrier (tyvek, building felt)
  • window
  • 2nd floor cantilevered 2'-0" out from 1st floor
  • foundation wall, footing, drain tile
  • basement, slab on grade

References:

  • Text book: Allen, Fundamentals of Building Construction, describes the construction of a wood, light-frame house in a step-by-step manner (129-244);
  • Allen, Architectural Detailing NA2718 A42, illustrates a possible detailing strategy for a wood-frame house (179-212);
  • Architectural Graphic Standards, latest edition (permanent reserve), shows generic sections and misc. details (see contents and index).

Additional reserve references that may be consulted include:

  • Ching, Building Construction Illustrated TH146 C53 1991;
  • Huntington, Building Construction +TH145H95 1987;
  • Thallon, Graphic Guide to Frame Construction TH1101 T48x 1991

Requirements: Photocopy or "blueprint" on 8-1/2" x 11 or 11" x 17" paper, folded in half. No rolled-up drawings or drawings mounted on boards, please! Use scale: 1" = 1'0"; label neatly all relevant parts of the construction. Use break lines in walls to reduce size of drawing. See Allen, Architectural Detailing, p. 204 for an example of how to format notes; see Brand, Architectural Details for Insulated Buildings TH1715 B66x 1990 (also on reserve) for an alternate model in which notes are consolidated.

Optional: Add a product or system from Sweet's Catalog within the detailed section. Include sketches or photocopy of relevant pages from Sweets.

Academic Integrity:

"Course Assignments. Students are encouraged to discuss the content of a course among themselves and to help each other to master it, but no student should receive help in doing a course assignment that is meant to test what he or she can do without help from others. Representing another's work as one's own is plagiarism and a violation of this Code. If materials are taken from published sources the student must clearly and completely cite the source of such materials."
--From the "Code of Academic Integrity," Policy Notebook for Cornell Community, Aug. 1998-99, p.78

For this assignment, wood-frame wall sections may be based on the drawings in the indicated references (but re-drawn at the correct scale, and modified as needed). Research may be done in groups, but the data so obtained must be individually interpreted; each drawing should be the work of the individual student.
