ARCH 262: Building Technology, Materials & Methods
Assign #2: Bearing wall buildings


assigned: Sept. 21, 1998
due: Sept. 28, 1998
Use the information contained in the text (Allen, Fundamentals of Building
Construction), especially the details on pp.330-331 (figs. 8.92, 8.93), to create
an exterior wall section for a 1-story building with the following characteristics:
  • 8"-thick CMU (concrete masonry unit, i.e., concrete block) bearing wall;
  • concrete slab on grade;
  • reinforced concrete foundation wall;
  • concrete footing (bottom of footing 36" below grade);
  • parapet wall*, similar to that in fig. 8.93;
  • roof system consisting of open web steel joists bearing on the CMU,
    corrugated steel deck, tapered rigid insulation, roof membrane (as in fig. 8.92)
* for more information on parapet walls, and the ways in which roofs are
"flashed" into them, see Architectural Graphic Standards: use index -- "parapets, flashing of..."

Do not show any wall insulation.
