ARCH 262: Building Technology, Materials & Methods
Assign #1: Building systems, wood-frame construction

assigned: Sept. 7, 1998
due: Sept. 14, 1998
Part 1. Using Sweet's Catalog File (Fine Arts Library, reference area),
select any two products or systems from Masterformat Divisions 2-10.
Then, sketch a hypothetical building or structure in which these two
products or systems are schematically shown and labelled (see example below).

Notes:

  1. Use cut-away or exploded axon techniques if necessary to indicate the
construction details (internal, hidden structure; connections to
adjacent elements) typical of your selected products or systems.
  2. Labelling of selected product or system should include: a) Masterformat
division number and name; b) Product or system name; c) Product
or system description (e.g., "membrane roofing system"); and d) Masterformat-
    Sweet's reference number.
  3. The Sweet's Catalog File is heavy, but quite delicate. Be extremely
careful if you make photocopies; it's better to just take notes or tracings
(you'll learn more that way, as well). DO NOT UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES
REMOVE ANY PAGES FROM THE CATALOG. The reference must be
maintained in good condition for other students and faculty.
  4. You are welcome to use the 1996 version of Sweet's in my office (Rand 121)
during office hours (Thurs, Fri mornings between 9:00 and 10:30 --
    no appointment necessary).

Part 2. Draw and label a wall section of a wood "platform-framed" residential
structure from footings to roof (hardline or careful freehand) ;
scale 1" = 1'-0". Include sill and head of window. Possible references
(on reserve) include:

  • Allen, Fundamentals of Building Construction NA145 A42 1990
  • Allen, Architectural Detailing NA2718 A42
  • Ching, Building Construction Illustrated TH146 C53 1991
  • Huntington, Building Construction +TH145H95 1987
  • Thallon, Graphic Guide to Frame Construction TH1101 T48x 1991
  • Architectural Graphic Standards, latest edition (permanent reserve)

Format: 8-1/2" x 11". Part 1 drawing may be drawn or reduced
onto 8-1/2" x 11" sheet; Part 2 wall section should be drawn to scale (use
break lines to fit entire section within the required format).

Academic Integrity:

"Course Assignments. Students are encouraged to discuss the content of a
course among themselves and to help each other to master it, but no student
should receive help in doing a course assignment that is meant to test
what he or she can do without help from others. Representing another's
work as one's own is plagiarism and a violation of this Code. If materials are
taken from published sources the student must clearly and completely
cite the source of such materials."

--From the "Code of Academic Integrity," Policy Notebook for Cornell
Community, Aug. 1998-99, p.78

For this assignment, students are expected to choose and interpret the
building products or systems (Part 1) individually; wood-frame wall sections
(Part 2) may be copied from the indicated references (re-drawn), but the
source or sources section should be clearly indicated. These drawings
must be the work of individual students.
