Assign #3 comments: Sealant Joint and Heat Loss Calculations

Part I, 3-D view.

See text for information on open-web steel joists, cavity wall reinforcement, furring, etc. The following images are taken from a "google image" search under OWSJ and open web steel joists:
OWSJ images
Note the construction of the OWSJ, with double angles for the top and bottom flanges and a space between for insertion of the web element. Also note the means of connection to the steel plate above the bond beam. For additional images, see selected student work.

Part II, Sealant joint calculation.

Consider summer and winter movement. Note that CMU shrinkage compresses the joint and needs to be considered in movement calculations (see diagram below).
diagram

- SUMMER
joint gets smaller
- WINTER
joint gets larger

thermal movement = 0.0000036(16x12)(temp. change) = 0.0000036(16x12)(100-40) = 0.041" - = 0.0000036(16x12)(65 - -10) = 0.052"

brick moisture expansion = 0.0002(16x12) = 0.038" - = 0 (worse case)

CMU shrinkage = 0.0002(16x12) = 0.038" - = 0 (worse case)

movement subtotal 0.117" - 0.052"

joint width for movement = 100/50 times movement 0.234 - 0.104"

tolerance = 1/8" 0.125 - 0.125"

Total req'd sealant width 0.359" or 3/8" - 0.229

Part III, heat loss calculation.

Temperature differential (winter) = 70 - (-10) = 80 degrees F.

U-values:
wall:

  • Rtotal = 0.45 + 1.11 + 8.0 + 1.0 + 0.44 = 11.0
  • Utotal = 1/Rtotal = 0.091
window:
  • Utotal = 0.3
roof:
  • Rtotal = 12.0 + 0.45 = 12.45
  • Utotal = 1/Rtotal = 0.080
Heat loss in BTU/hr:
wall: (4760)(0.091)(80) = 34,653
window: (1000)(0.3)(80) = 24,000
roof: (7200)(0.080)(80) = 46,080
Total heat loss = 104,733 BTU/hr
